The Assamese Department was established in the year 1959. The Department introduced its Honours course in 1966.  The department recieved the permanent affiliation in the year 1981. The department has a strength of two Associate Professors and four Assistant Professors  (Ph.D: 1,  M. Phil: 2,   pursuing Ph.D.: 1).  The Department has an association named as PRAKTAN SIKHYARTHI MANCHA, ASOMIYA BIBHAG.  The Department has been publishing a Wall Magazine named as RAMDHENU since 2003 prepared by the students under the supervision of the teachers. An Annual Journal JAGRITI is published by the students under the supervision and financial aid of the department teachers.

Mission of the Department

  • To instill moral, social and aesthetic values in students so that they can march ahead with optimism.
  • To broaden the minds of the students by stressing upon traditional as well as present-day values of life through education.
  • To inculcate honesty, integrity and cultured behavior among the students and create responsible citizens.

Future Plan of the Department

  • To start the PG course in Assamese.
  • To undertake research projects.
  • To start the Language Laboratory.
  • To organize National Seminar/Workshop/Conferences.
  • To organize popular talks.

Events of the Department

Webinars

  1. A webinar titled “Sampratik Prekhyapatat Asamar Pariveshya Kala: Sankat aru Sambhavana” was organized by the Dept. of Assamese on 6 July, 2020. The resource person of the webinar was Dr Pranjit Bora, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Assamese, Dibrugarh University.
  2. A webinar on “Asamiya Bhasar Jug Bibhajan: Punarbichar” was organized by the Dept. of Assamese on 29 July, 2020. The resource person of the event was Dr Subasana Mahanta (Choudhury), Professor, Dept. of Assamese, Dibrugarh University.
  3. A webinar on “Bishnu Rabha Diwas Udjapon” was organized by the Dept. of Assamese in association with IQAC, Gargaon College on 20th June, 2021. The Guest Speaker of the programme was Hemraj Rabha, eminent composer and singer and son of Bishnu Prasad Rabha.
  4. A national webinar on “Gobesona Potro Prostutkoron: Poddhoti aru Koushal” was organized by the Dept. of Assamese in association with IQAC, Gargaon College on 22nd June, 2021. The resource person for the webinar was Dr Pallabi Borah, Assistant Professor, Department of Folklore Research, Gauhati University.

Special Lecture/ Popular Talk:

  1. A special lecture on the topic “Natun Projanmar Manasik Uttaran Aru Adhyatmik Chinta” by Dr Pitambar Deva Goswami, eminent writer and Hon’ble Sattradhikar of Auniati Sattra, Majuli was organized by the Dept. of Assamese on 5th September, 2015.
  2. A special talk on the topic “Shristisheel Sahitya: Likhan-kaushal” by Rajib Bora, eminent poet was organized by the Dept. of Assamese on 16th February, 2019.

State Level Seminar:

  1. A one day State Level Seminar in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi on the topic “Asamiya Byanga Sahitya” was organized by the Dept. of Assamese in 2016. The resource persons were Punya Saikia and Dr Bikash Baruah, eminent satirists of Assamese literature.

Workshop:

  1. A state level workshop on “Shristisheel Sahitya: Likhan-kaushal” was organized by the Dept. of Assamese on 6th September, 2017. The resource persons were Dr Pallavi Deka Buzarboruah, eminent writer and Professor, Dept. of Assamese, Dibrugarh University and and Dr Mridul Sarma, eminent writer and Associate Professor, Dept. of Assamese, DHSK College.
  2. A college level workshop on “Asomiya Bhasar Uccharan Aru Bornasudhi” was organized by the Dept. of Assamese on 3rd April, 2018. The resource person was Dr Bhimkanta Baruah eminent linguist and Professor (retd)., Dept. of Assamese, Dibrugarh University.

Annual Events:

  1. Pragya Sandhani Divas is organized by the Dept. of Assamese every year to discover the latent talents of the students of the department. Other events of this day include the release of the students’ wall magazine and students’ journal.
