The Department of Sociology was established in the year 1974. It is run by a group of well-qualified (2 M.Phil, 1 Ph.D. pursuing) and experienced faculty members. The department offers Bachelor Degree (Major), Non-Major and Higher Secondary Courses. It has an association named as Study Circle under whose aegis various programmes and initiatives have been undertaken for the well-round development of the students of the department. The best practices of the Department include use of smart class, audio-visual aids in teaching, publication of students' magazine, presence of a strong alumni participation and support.

Mission of the Department

To expand the minds of the students by emphasizing upon traditional as well as recent values of life through education.
To march ahead with positive thinking and to develop a sense of moral, social and aesthetic values in them
To inculcate honesty, integrity and civilized behaviour among the students so that they can step into society as shining examples.

Future Plan of the Department

To organise State/National and International level seminar annually.
To organise one popular talk on Economic Development in Assam.
To organise one workshop on Research Methodology in Social Research.
To conduct Minor/Major Research Project by the faculties of the Deptt. On Sociological issues.
To conduct Awareness Programme on Health and Hygiene and Scientific thinking annually.
To conduct student career counselling programme for future placement of outgoing students.
Conduct programme to inculcate morality into the students.
