The Department of Botany was established in 1969 and is one of the leading Departments of the Sivasgar District of Assam (India) in the field of teaching and research in plant sciences. Since its inception, the department has been offering H S course and the UG course was started in1975. The Honours course in Botany was introduced in the department in 1989. For about four decades after its establishment, the Department was recognized for teaching as per the Syllabus approved by the Dibrugarh University, Dibrugarh (Assam) in both Honours and Non – Honours Courses. The Department has undertaken research projects in the areas of medicinal plant biology, plant taxonomy for which it has received funds from Government funding agencies especially from UGC. The department has a computer and Internet facility. Wi-Fi connectivity is available within the Department, which is accessed by both faculty and students. The Botany Department has a Botanical garden, spread over the entire campus of the College having a collection of over 100 species of 200 genera from 81 families of plants. Its special features include a collection of medicinal plants and plants of special botanical interest. The department has a museum and has a collection of fossil specimens, herbarium, medicinal plants, and 70 varieties of rice, besides wet and dry specimens of the plants.
