The Department of English, Gargaon College started functioning with the strength of only one teacher, Dr C S Rao, in 1959. A few years later, he was assisted by D.K Mac Furlong as a part-time lecturer, who worked temporarily for a couple of years. By 1977, there was a total strength of four teachers and major course was introduced. The Department of English aims for the Holistic development of the students. The department offers opportunities for the learning of English in pass course as well as in Honours course. The total strength of regular teachers is six at present with two Associate Professors and four Assistant Professors. Three teachers of the department have been awarded Ph.D and one teacher is pursuing Ph.D under Dibrugarh University. Five teachers of the department have M.Phil. Degree.

The department encourages holding of seminars at the state and national level as well as in the Department itself. Apart from such activities, students are encouraged to take part in various programmes and activities of NSS, Youth Festival among other events.

The Department has an Association of its own named as the 'Gargaon College English Literary Association' under whose aegis every activity of the department is carried out. The members of the Association include all the Major students and the faculty members of the department.

  • To encourage self-evaluation, personality development and confidence building thereby guiding the students to strive towards perfection inculcating a sound philosophy for a holistic living.
  • To guide them to achieve their goals by upholding the values of social progress and commitment.
  • To provide an excellent teaching and learning environment for better exchange of ideas and knowledge.
  • To cater to the needs of the rural and economically weaker students.

 

Future Plan of the Department

  • To introduce PG Course in English under Dibrugarh University
  • To set up a language laboratory
  • To undertake research projects
  • To organize National, International Seminars/Workshops/Conferences
  • To incorporate new teaching methods by providing digital classroom

Goals and Objectives of the Department

  • The Department motivates the students to culture the best practices and develop positive attitude.
  • To provide a platform to the students to exhibit their talents and creativity.
  • To enrich the knowledge of the students on global issues and make them informative and competitive.
  • The department motivates the students to showcase their literary creativity by way of publication.
  • Apart from the course syllabus, the department encourages the students to participate in extra curricular activities.
  • To impart employability skills.

Innovative Practices of the Department

  • Regular Seminars are arranged for all the  Major students.
  • Group Discussions are conducted on a regular basis.
  • Department conducts Mock Test in every semester.
  • Adaptation of Films on Novels, Dramas included in the Syllabus.
  • Students are encouraged to play the role of teachers in the classroom in respective classes.

 

Departmental Library

The Department of English has a well-equipped library of more than 300 books. Reading materials in Xerox form are also maintained in the library for the use of the students. Moreover films on novels and dramas prescribed in the syllabus are kept in digital format. The Department subscribes an International Journal of Language and Literature  titled “ROCK PEBBLES”

SWOT Analysis of the Department:

Strength

  • The English Department has been able to produce a topper of English Honours under Dibrugarh University in 2015.
  • It has qualified faculty members.
  • It has established good parent-teacher relationship. Guardian meeting is held annually and good contact is maintained with parents.

Weakness

  • Poor communication skill in English
  • Lack of sufficient man power to handle a large number of students.

Opportunities

  • Opportunity for carrying out research based projects.
  • Opportunity for opening vocational courses related to areas such as Spoken English, Business Communication etc.
  • Opportunity of opening consultancy services.

Challenges

Imparting English teaching to rural based students with poor English background.

  • Majority of students belong to poor economic background.
  • In the presence of prescribed traditional course curricula, less opportunities for open skill based course (parallel course).

OUR PRIDE

  1. HimakhiPhukan secured First Class First position and became the Topperin B.A. English (Hons) Examination, 2015 held under Dibrugarh University. She was also a recipient of the “Ram Deo Sharma Award 2012” conferred by Assam Sahitya Sabha.
  2. NimpiBorgohain secured the First Class Third position and Ms. PlabitaPhukan secured the First Class Fourth position in B.A. English (Hons) Examination held in 2019 under Dibrugarh University.
  3. AngkritaChetia secured the First Class Third position (with distinction) in the B.A. English (hons) Examination held in 2020 under Dibrugarh University.

Awards and Recognition Received by Faculty Members

Dr. Rashmi Rekha Saikia was awarded Best Educationist Award for Talented Personalities in 2017, by Economic Growth Foundation, New Delhi.

Students' Publication

  1. A students' wall-magazine titled Blossoms is brought out by the students of the department every year to commemorate the birth day of Dr. Sarbepalli Radhakrishnan.
  2. A e-magazine titled Rumination (July 2021, Vol.-1) of the Department of English was released on 5th July, 2021 by Mrs. Anmona Bora, former HOD, Department of English and Retd. Vice Principal, J B College, Jorhat.

 

Events of the Department

Seminars/ Conference/Popular Talk organized by the Department

  1. The Department of English organized a Popular Talk on Post Colonial Literature on 5th March, 2016. The resource person was Dr Mridul Bordoloi, Associate Professor, Dept. of English, Dibrugarh University.
  2. An ICSSR Sponsored National Seminar was organized by the English Department on 21st and 22nd September, 2018 on the Topic “Exploring Female Voices in the Writings of Contemporary Indian English Literature”
  3. The Department of English organized a Popular Talk on "Introducing Drama: Trends and Movements" on 28th of September 2019. The speaker was Dr. Meena Sharma, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Dibrugarh University.
  4. An International Webinar on "Ideas and Trends of Feminism, Gender Equality and Women's Movement" was organized by the Department of English on  7th August, 2020. The resource persons were Dr. Upasana Mahanta, Professor & Executive Director, Centre for Women, Law and Social Change Jindal Global Law, O.P.Jindal Global University, Dr Dipti Visuddhangkoon, Associate Professor, Department of English, Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University, Thailand  and Dr Hemjyoti Medhi, Associate Professor, Department of English, Tezpur University.
  5. A National Webinar on "Trends in Contemporary Indian Women's Writing in English" was organized by the Department of English on  5th July, 2021. The resource persons were Mrs.  Anmona Bora, Former HOD, Dept of English & Vice Principal, J.B. College (Autonomous) Jorhat and Dr. Indu Swami, Assistant Professor, Dept. of English, Assam University Diphu Campus.

 

ANNUAL EVENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT

  1.  The Department of English organizes a felicitation cum guardian meet annually for the purpose of felicitating the meritorious students graduating from the department and to establish a healthy and fruitful parent-teacher-student relationship.
