The Department of Economics was established in the year 1959.  The  Department offers B. A., B.Sc. (Major & Non Major) courses. The department has a strength of 5 experienced faculty members (members with Ph.D.: 3,  M. Phil: 3,   pursuing Ph.D.: 1).  The Department has an association,  named as Gargaon College Economic Association (GCEA).

Best Practices of the Department

  • The department introduced a Scholarship entitled Anuprerona, which is a joint initiative of Dr. Surajit Saikia and Nilutpal Chutia. Under Anuprerona, until now more than 30 poor meritorious students have been supplied study materials, papers and financial support.
  • The department has introduced Gaurab Gogoi Memorial Award, a one-time scholarship scheme of Rs. 3000 in memory of Late Gaurab Gogoi. The scholarship is an initiative by Dr. Surajit Saikia and is awarded to the highest scorers in Degree Final Year Examination of Economics and Botany Department of Gargaon College.
  • In the year 2020, the department also made donations under Anuprerona Health Relief.
  • The faculty members regularly donate books to the department library.
  • The students of the department voluntarily dedicate at least one hour to clean the department premises.

Mission of the Department

In addition to the overall mission of the college, the department has the following specific missions:

  • To provide applied knowledge of the course.
  • To enhance employability of the students by giving them regular counseling.
  • To encourage the students for developing entrepreneurial skill and self-employment.
  • To disseminate information to students regarding further higher education

Future Plan of the Department

  • To open PG Course in Economics.
  • To start a short-term certificate course on Entrepreneurship.
  • To start a short-term certificate course on Computer Applications in Data Analysis.
  • Coaching for the department students to appear in various competitive examinations.
  • To start a bridge course in basic mathematics (higher secondary level).
